Former Mount Gambier Hospital

As you may be aware Council purchased the site on 7th November 2011. The site was originally sold by the State Government in 1998 and has remained vacant whilst held by private companies.

Further to Council’s purchase of the site, the following actions have been undertaken and will continue to occur:

• Council has spent considerable effort in cleaning up the site leading to a significant improvement in visual appearance. Feedback on this improvement from the nearby community has been very positive.
• In the week commencing 16th January 2012 the old fencing will be removed and a formal security fence will be erected around the buildings to ensure restricted site access.
• Following the completion of the fencing, as much land as possible on the north west and south side will be made available for public access.
• Shortly after purchase, Council commissioned a hospital building asbestos register that has identified remnants of asbestos products commonly used in buildings of this age.
• As required by legislation, Council has contacted a licensed asbestos removal company to remove the remnant asbestos from the site during January 2012. As part of this removal process, air quality monitoring will occur around the site for the duration of this work and that should be completed in 2-3 weeks.
• Community Consultation continues via the Council’s website and Council remains keen to receive your views on the future of the Former Mount Gambier Hospital site.

Should you have further questions they can be directed to Council’s Community Relations Officer, Barbara Linden on 8721 2587.
