The Mount Gambier Public Library offers an inter-library loan service to its registered users, free of charge. When a particular item is required which is not available in the Library, a staff member can attempt to locate it for you from other libraries within South Australia. This is done by accessing the PLAIN system (Public Libraries Automated Information Network), enabling staff to search a catalogue of items held by other libraries.

Searches can be undertaken using titles, authors, subjects or a series, and only take a few minutes to complete. The usual time frame allowed for the item to arrive is on average between 1 and 2 weeks, however if you still have not been notified that your item has come in for you after 3 weeks, it would be wise to contact the Library so that staff may enquire as to its whereabouts on your behalf.

In instances where text books or other reference materials may be required, staff can also contact Universities and State Libraries in an effort to locate the item for you. Items requested from Universities or interstate Libraries will attract a fee per item requested, and those loaned from the State Library of South Australia will need to be viewed in the Mount Gambier Public Library only.

Staff can also undertake subject requests, if you are unable to locate satisfactory information held by the Mount Gambier Public Library. This may include a search of encyclopaedias and / or the internet, and standard charges for photocopies or print-outs will apply.
