Australia Day, January 26, is the biggest day of National celebration. On Australia Day Mount Gambier celebrates what's great about Australia and being Australian. It's the day where we reflect on what we have achieved and what we can be proud of in our great nation. It's the day for us to commit to making Australia an even better place for the future.
Nominations are open and lodged in the first fortnight of November to the City of Mount Gambier for the Mount Gambier Citizen of the year, Young Citizen of the Year (age 29 years or under), and Community Event of the Year Awards.
The awards are open to residents who have made an outstanding contribution to the communinity during the year or over a number of years. The events category is open to individuals or groups who have staged an outstanding community event.
A special Australia Day Breakfast is held at the Railway Lands, where the community is invited to come together, affirm commitment to Australia and provides us with a wonderful opportunity to recognise and acknowledge members of our local community who have made positive contributions and honour them on Australia Day as the Citizen of the Year Awards are handed out.
"Australia Day is driven by people, communities, and their celebrations held across this great nation of ours. It's a celebration of what's great about Australia and being Australian. It's also a day where we honour local people who have made an outstanding contribution to our community by presenting these Australia Day awards" said Mayor Andrew Lee.
