The City of Mount Gambier provides a range of support that
directly or indirectly supports the economic well being of
Mount Gambier and the region.
Council continues to invest in a range of initiatives in support of the economic growth and well being of the City. These include:- The Limestone Coast Regional Development Board is effectively the economic development ‘arm’ of Council. The Board delivers a range of services and carries out a range of activities associated with economic development in a regional framework. The City Centre Marketing Team is an initiative of the Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce and Industry and City of Mount Gambier to promote and market the retail advantages of the City Centre of Mount Gambier to the greater region. The South East Resource Information Centre (SERIC) is a strategic partnership with the objective of providing spatial information services and building the capacity of contributing partners to realise opportunities and benefits for natural resource management and economic development in this region. The City of Mount Gambier in partnership with the District Council of Grant and Wattle Range Council in South Australia as well as five (5) local government authorities in Victoria have supported an application which has resulted in the Kanawinka Geopark - ‘Land of Tomorrow’ being recognised as the 57th Global Geopark and Australia’s first Geopark. Council has continued to recognise the promotional, economic and employment benefits to Mount Gambier and the region that is realised from the hosting of Major Events within Mount Gambier. Council also recognises that the conduct of Major and Minor Community Events can be a significant contribution to the quality of life and that community celebration is an important factor in the development of any community. Other recent initiatives that Council has undertaken in direct support to the well being of the City include:- Under Verandah Lighting Project - the objective of this initiative is to ensure that all areas of footpaths in the Commercial Street CBD area are illuminated with a minimum level of light to reduce deep shadows and improve pedestrian comfort at night. Mount Gambier Security Foot Patrols continue to ensure high levels of acceptable public behaviour as well as providing valuable support to Police in the early hours of Saturday and Sunday mornings, in the Mount Gambier CBD. City Centre Surveillance Cameras - a total of eight (8) surveillance cameras strategically located in the City Centre area provide Police with greater levels of coverage to assist with their role in the community. A further two (2)surveillance cameras are to be installed in 2009. Council’s Business Services Charter aims to improve Council/Business communication by clearly outlining Council services provided to business and seeking business feedback on the services and service standards. |
