From the Artists

Huna Studio is a multidisciplinary design practice founded by Mitch Walker and Tom Proctor in 2023, dedicated to responsive, place-based architecture, art, and sculpture. Drawing on over two decades of experience in leading Australian architectural practices, Huna creates works that are technically refined and deeply connected to community and environment.

Their piece for the Beacon Art Project, looks to celebrate the ancient natural history of the Limestone Coast through the creation of an imagined mega-fauna—an evocative sculptural form inspired by the region’s paleontological discoveries. Emerging from the depths of local sinkholes, this creature journeys through the city, embodying the spirit of the landscape and its prehistoric marsupials. Interactive and immersive, the work invites curiosity and discovery, encouraging audiences to engage with the region’s rich ecological narrative. Envisioned as the first in a mythical series, the sculpture fosters a continuing dialogue between place, story, and community.
