The Mount Gambier Community Mayor’s Christmas Appeal has officially been granted Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status, meaning donations of $2.00 or more are now tax-deductible, making it easier than ever for locals to support those in need this festive season.
Each year, the appeal plays a vital role in ensuring vulnerable and isolated members of our community experience the joy and dignity of Christmas. With DGR status now in place, people can donate and receive a tax-deductible receipt, helping stretch generosity even further.
“This milestone means every dollar donated not only brings joy to someone in need, it also benefits the donor,” City of Mount Gambier Mayor Lynette Martin said.
“We are proud to make giving more accessible and impactful for our community.”
All funds raised are distributed through the Christmas Cheer Program, delivered by local agencies:
In 2024 these agencies supported 1,657 people from 711 families over the festive season. - Mayor Martin
“The appeal is a true community effort. It is powered entirely by local generosity, and every cent stays right here in Mount Gambier.”
Demand for support has increased as the cost of living continues to rise, placing greater pressure on agencies to meet the growing need for food hampers, gift vouchers, and presents for individuals and families.
“We are expecting to have more demand than ever before for help as part of the Christmas Cheer program, as we have had so many requests for assistance with food this year. On a regular weekday we used to get about six to eight people, but now we are getting more than 20 requests for help,” St Vincent de Paul’s John D’Souza said.
“We used to do our emergency relief program on Monday’s and Friday’s and we’ve had to open up another day,” ac.care’s Deanne Swift said.
The City of Mount Gambier acts as a collection point for funds, ensuring transparency and efficiency.
“This year we’ve also introduced an online donation option, making the process easier and more convenient for many people,” Mayor Martin added.
Ways to donate
“Christmas is a time for compassion and connection. With DGR status now in place, we hope even more people will be inspired to give generously and help make this season brighter for all,” Mayor Martin said.
“Whether it’s $2.00 or $200, every donation helps bring warmth, food, and festive cheer to those who need it most.”
As the festive season approaches, the Christmas light display on the Old Town Hall will return to mark donation milestones. For every $5,000 raised, a new window will be illuminated with magical Christmas lights, visibly celebrating the community’s generosity.
“It’s a wonderful way to show how every contribution adds up to something truly special,” Mayor Martin said.
