Cast in Blue damage

Cast in Blue damage
15 September 2025

City of Mount Gambier is disappointed to report another incident of vandalism involving the Cast in Blue sculpture.

CCTV footage captured an individual affixing artificial eyes to the sculpture in the early hours of Sunday morning 14 September 2025. This act constitutes vandalism under the law, and a formal police report has been lodged and an arrest has now been made.

“This wilful damage to a valued public artwork is inappropriate and disrespectful,” Mayor Lynette Martin said.

“It is not harmless fun, it is costly - it is also frustrating to those members of our community who have embraced Cast in Blue. Rectifying the damage will result in significant repair expenses, and Council remains committed to pursuing cost recovery from those responsible.”

Restoration of the sculpture has now begun. It is estimated the works will take two days (dependent on weather conditions). During the works, the artwork will be protected by fencing which will ensure the work is completed professionally and that members of the public are separated from the works area.
