City of Mount Gambier is seeking community feedback on its draft Disability Access and Inclusion Plan (DAIP) 2025 - 2029.

Council endorsed the draft plan for public consultation at its meeting on Tuesday 18 November 2025, marking an important step in fulfilling its legislative obligations under the Disability Inclusion Act 2018 (SA). The Act requires all State authorities to develop and implement a Disability Access and Inclusion Plan to ensure people living with disability can participate fully and equally in community life.

Team Leader Library Operations Sally Mann said the draft plan reflects Council’s ongoing commitment to creating an inclusive, accessible and equitable community.

“This plan builds on the achievements of our first DAIP and aligns with the updated State Disability Inclusion Plan. It sets out clear actions that focus on what Council can deliver, support, and advocate for within our role as local government,” Ms Mann said.

The DAIP outlines strategies to improve access and inclusion across built environments, events, facilities, information and communications, services and employment. Actions include:

  • Maintaining and upgrading physical infrastructure to improve accessibility,
  • Providing accessible information and inclusive community events,
  • Supporting local projects and partnerships to increase awareness and opportunities, and
  • Advocating for equitable access to services and resources.

The draft plan was shaped through extensive community engagement, including feedback via the Have Your Say Mount Gambier community consultation platform, submissions from individuals and organisations, and a co-design process facilitated by JFA Purple Orange. This process ensured that the voices of people with lived experience of disability were central to the plan’s development.

“This plan reflects the voices of our community. The co-design process led by JFA Purple Orange ensured that people with lived experience of disability were at the heart of its development,” Ms Mann said.

Community members are encouraged to review the DAIP and share feedback at:

Public consultation closes on Monday 15 December 2025.

The final plan will be presented to Council for endorsement in January 2026 and published by 14 February 2026, as required by legislation.
