The land for the Cemetery and Crematorium now known as Carinya Gardens Cemetery (which means 'a happy peaceful home') was purchased in the late 1950's and comprises approximately 11 hectares.

  • The gardens were dedicated as a cemetery on 8 January 1967.
  • The first burial took place on 28 December 1966 (Mary Victoria Smith - Cypress Garden, Allotment A13).

Development of the crematorium at Carinya Gardens Cemetery was commenced in 1985 at a cost of $395,000.

  • The first cremation took place on 2 February 1987.
  • The Mayor at the time, Mayor Don McDonnell, officially opened the crematorium on 5 April 1987.

The cemetery offers a variety of options for memorialising cremated remains. Memorial areas include waterfall gardens, rotunda garden, rose gardens as well as niche walls.

New burial allotments are available in Sections H and J at Lake Terrace Cemetery. Please contact the office at Carinya Gardens Cemetery on 08 8721 2450 for any enquiries.

The first burial in Section J (ground burial section) took place on 4 May 2001 and the first burial in Section H (vault section) took place on 6 May 1997.

Carinya Gardens Cemetery is located at the corner of Grant Avenue and White Avenue, Mount Gambier. The office hours are Monday to Friday from 9:30am to 3:00pm (except public holidays).
