Kerbside Bulky Waste Collection Trial

The City of Mount Gambier has introduced a trial bulky / hard waste collection service for residents that currently receive a kerbside waste, recycling and FOGO (green organics) collection service.

From 1 July 2020 households can book a bulky / hard waste collection service for larger household items to be removed and managed responsibly by Council.

To book contact Council on 8721 2555 or email city@mountgambier.sa.gov.au to request a bulky / hard waste collection and provide your contact information. You will then be contacted directly by Council to advise of the collection date.

Conditions apply

  • You are entitled to book ONE free kerbside collection per household during the trial period.
  • Please ensure you only place permitted items out for collection as any items that are not acceptable will not be collected (refer to flyer for list of accepted/unaccepted items).
  • Permitted items must not be left on the kerbside until after 6:00pm the night before your confirmed date of collection and ensure it is ready for collection by 6:00am the day of collection.
  • Items to be sorted into the following groups: metals, timber, furniture and e-waste.
  • Items that are too heavy for two people to lift (>50kg) cannot be accepted.
  • A maximum of 2m³ per household can be collected.
  • This service is available to residents for household hard waste only (commercial, business or industrial waste is not accepted).

If you reside at a residential property within the City of Mount Gambier you are eligible for one pick up of two cubic metres of hard/bulky waste.

This service forms part of Council’s ‘Our City, Our Response’ strategy to assist our community during COVID-19.

Since the establishment of the ReUse Market residents have had the option to dispose of good quality items for free at the Waste Transfer Station, however there are many people who for various reasons are unable to transport these goods. Many residents have been doing ‘clean outs’ at their homes and this will help to dispose of those unwanted bulky items.

Council staff will sort the items that are collected and those in good condition will go to the ReUse Market for re-sale. Items that are not in good condition will be disassembled/separated to maximise recycling, and minimise waste to landfill.

This service is proposed to cost up to $200,000 over the trial period, with resources allocated via the ‘Our City, Our Response’ COVID-19 strategy to assist our community during this time.

Offering this service will allow Council to reduce waste going to our landfill as items in good condition can go the ReUse Market and all other items will be sorted appropriately and recycled where possible, which will in turn save money.

No, this is a by-appointment service only and any items left on the kerb without an appointment will not be collected.
