Children’s author Olivia Coates will launch her picture book Shadow Wall at the Mount Gambier Library on Saturday 26 August at 11:00am.

Before pursuing her dreams of becoming a writer, the author worked as a kindergarten teacher and ran a drama program for primary school children.

One of my favourite things in the world is getting children excited about nature, gardening and developing a lifelong love for reading. - Author Olivia Coates

Shadow Wall is a beautifully illustrated children’s book about overcoming loneliness and using art as a healing process.

Little Scarlet once lived at home filled with colour, where she painted with Grandma Ruby. Green meadows, blue wildflowers and yellow ducklings danced across the canvas. But not anymore. Since Scarlet moved to the city, her days are no longer filled with the joys that she’s used to. Instead, darkness dominates her world. The grey seems never-ending, and frightening shadows creep through the cracks in the walls. That is until she discovers something. The people of Scarlet’s new world are not as frightening as they seem, and through the power of connection and some enchanting gifts, colour slowly returns to her world.

This is a family friendly event suitable for ages 4 to 10 years. Children will be encouraged to sing and act out the story with the author, then have the chance to get artistic and create their own Shadow Wall mural with morning tea supplied.

Bookings are available by contacting the Mount Gambier Library on 08 8721 2540 or book online at www.mountgambier.sa.gov.au/library under ‘Programs and Events’.
