Two exhibitions - JamFactory ICON Julie Blyfield: Chasing a Passion and Phil Riley: I Own a Phil Riley - will open at The Riddoch Arts and Cultural Centre on Friday 8 August 2025 at 6:00pm, celebrating craftsmanship, creativity and community.
One of Australia's most respected contemporary jewellers, Julie Blyfield brings her celebrated touring exhibition Chasing a Passion to Mount Gambier as part of JamFactory’s ICON series. Inspired by the natural world and botanical forms, Blyfield's finely detailed works in metal is the result of decades of technical mastery and deep artistic curiosity.
Complementing this national icon is Mount Gambier’s own renowned jeweller Phil Riley, whose handcrafted bracelets have become recognisable around the country. I Own a Phil Riley celebrates the timeless appeal of Riley’s work – bringing together pieces that are instantly recognisable, worn with pride, and steeped in personal stories from the Limestone Coast and beyond.
“We are thrilled to showcase the local talent of Phil Riley, whose meticulous and skilful work through jewellery has created an iconic design and legacy, renowned throughout the region,” Riddoch Arts and Cultural Centre Director Ashleigh Whatling said.
“This exhibition is perfectly placed alongside Julie Blyfield’s national touring exhibition - celebrating jewellery as memories, connection and pieces of significance.”
The community is invited to attend the official opening of both exhibitions, providing an opportunity to meet the artists, explore their personal approaches to jewellery-making, and celebrate the talent shaping our local and national creative landscapes.
"Both exhibitions shine a light on jewellery as more than ornament – it's a vessel for memory, identity, and connection," Riddoch Curator Chris Clements said.
"Julie and Phil come from very different practices, but they share an extraordinary dedication to craft and storytelling through their work. It's a joy to bring these two exhibitions together for our community."
The celebration of artistry and storytelling continues on Saturday 9 August 2025 with an in-conversation event between Julie Blyfield and Phil Riley, facilitated by The Riddoch’s Chris Clements. The free event begins at 10:00am, offering a rare glimpse into the lives and practices of two makers who’ve left an indelible mark on the world of contemporary jewellery.
Following the discussion, guests are invited to ‘Bring Your Phil Riley’ at City Hall for a morning tea and gathering where Phil Riley jewellery owners can connect, share stories, and show off their treasured pieces. This event forms part of Loneliness Awareness Week, championing the power of shared experiences and the objects that bond us.
Both exhibitions are on display until 26 October. The Riddoch Arts and Cultural Centre is open from 10:00am to 5:00pm weekdays and 10:00am to 2:00pm weekends and most public holidays. Entry is free. For more information visit theriddoch.com.au
