Advocating for a public transport system fit for a regional capital.

Public transport in Mount Gambier, and across South Australia, is the responsibility of the South Australian Government via the Department of Infrastructure and Transport (DIT).

Mount Gambier is South Australia’s regional capital and serves a cross-border population of more than 130,000 people. Despite our size and state contribution, our public transport system has remained unchanged for more than 35 years and, as a result, has become outdated, inequitable and inadequate.

The City of Mount Gambier continues to call on the South Australian Government to work in collaboration with us to deliver a sustainable, inclusive and modern public transport system that supports liveability, social equity, and opportunities for all in our community.

In support of the needs and interests of our community, Council has produced the following advocacy documents for the reference of our community:

  1. A one page ‘call to action’ – detailing the facts about the current service, its shortfalls and our community’s ask of the South Australian Government for improvement in the short and medium-term.
  2. A background document providing an overview of the challenges and opportunities attached to the existing public transport model in Mount Gambier.

In addition, Council continues to highlight the need for improvement via all opportunities. An example of this are the following detailed submissions:

Council is ready to work in collaboration with the South Australian Government to create a regional transport system model that is fair, progressive and fully aligned with South Australia’s goals of inclusion, equity and sustainability.
